Thesis (Ph.D.)--Queen's University (Canada), 2007.
Popular stereotypes of aging are predominantly negative in North American society, and researchers have attributed both short-term performance decline and longer-term health implications to the prevalence of such negative stereotypes. Manuscript one reviews the literature on stereotypes of aging, and how these potentially impact on beliefs seniors hold, their health-related behaviours, and ultimately on their long-term health and well-being.

The second manuscript is a systematic examination of the short-term effect of stereotypes on the performance of seniors in a variety of different domains. In total, 17 studies that looked at the impact of stereotyping on older individuals' cognitive, physical, physiological, and psychological performance were included for analysis. Overall, these studies showed that stereotype priming has a consistent and robust effect on performance measures.

The third manuscript details the attempt to replicate and extend this research into areas that are important to continued health and functioning of senior populations as they age. This experimental work examined 'stereotype threat' and its effect on six dependent variables: recall performance, reaction time, grip strength, flexibility, walking speed, and self-concept. Results indicate that the stereotype intervention did not influence any of the performance measures.

The final study (manuscript four) was qualitative in nature, in the attempt to garner a fuller understanding of societal stereotypes and their impact on seniors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 participants, who ranged in age from 62 to 74, and had a variety of occupational and educational backgrounds. Questions revolved around stereotypes of seniors, their ideas of what it means to age successfully, and their attitudes towards physical activity.

Ultimately, this dissertation challenges some of the assumptions around stereotype threat as it applies to seniors. While the theory does offer appealing and relatively simple solutions to important social issues, adoption of stereotype threat as an answer to complex social problems may be premature, in spite of what the literature in this area suggests.
