The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between the objective and subjective aspects of nursing home residents' daily experiences. Twelve older adults residing in nursing homes shared their daily experiences via the experience sampling method (ESM). The ESM involved participants carrying electronic paging devices for seven days and filling out a self-report form when signaled. Residents were signaled at six random times each day between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm. Residents responded to 307 of the 412 signals emitted.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Prior to completing any analyses, a principal components analysis was computed. Subsequently, two MANOVAs and one ANOVA were computed to examine the relationship between each of the independent variables (i.e., activity, companionship, and location) and the dependent variables (i.e., Factor 1: affect, freedom, arousal, involvement, wish; Factor 2: concentration, control; Factor 3: choice).

Activity was found to be significantly related to subjective experiences. Companionship was also found to be significantly related to subjective experiences, excluding the dependent variable of choice. Overall, the analyses examining the relationship between location and residents' subjective experiences resulted with few significant findings.

Residents' daily experiences were also categorized based on the relationship between perceived challenge and skill. A majority of daily experiences consisted of low challenge and low skill. Challenge/skill ratio was found to be significantly related to the subjective experiences, with residents' most positive experiences occurring when they perceived moderate skill and high challenge.

Discussion of the study focuses on ways the data provide a more in-depth view of daily experiences than gained from previous studies, possible limitations of Csikszentmihalyi's (1975; 1982) theory of optimal experience, implications for practice, and recommendations for future use of the ESM with older adults residing in nursing homes.
