The true goal of literacy education should be to help children achieve critical literacy. To do this, literacy education must start from the world in which students live and the experiences that they bring to their own education. After learning from students, educators can plan literacy programs that meet their needs and will motivate them to achieve.

The true goal of literacy education should be to help children achieve critical literacy. To do this, literacy education must start from the world in which students live and the experiences that they bring to their own education. After learning from students, educators can plan literacy programs that meet their needs and will motivate them to achieve.

This study used the Harry Potter books of J. K. Rowling as an example of what motivates children to read. Students wrote and discussed openly about their motivation to read these books. Patterns in their responses were interpreted as generalizations about what motivates students to read voluntarily.

The results showed themes such as action, familiarity, and escape that agree with previous research. New patterns, "light" and "dark," were also interpreted to motivate reading. The results are discussed as suggestions for literacy program creation.
