Relational databases have proven to be of considerable asset in many quantitative assessments of social phenomena, the University of Michigan's Correlates of War (COW) project being one of the more eminent datasets available to social scientists. However, the development of such large mainframe datasets requires huge investments in manpower and computational support. Such datasets very often limit themselves to statistical and quantitative analysis. Little work has been done in the development of smaller, autonomous electronic relational datasets that carry with them empirical information and yet have the ability of quasi-quantitative analysis. Detailed documentation on how to develop such desktop sociological datasets is meager at best.

This project finds as its charge two endeavors: to adequately document the formation of an experiential electronic relational database from an empirically rich paper-based dataset (Bercovitch and Jackson's International Conflict: A Chronological Encyclopedia of Conflicts and Their Management 1945--1995 ); and to test formulated hypotheses derived from popular schools of thought concerning ethnic violence and conflict against electronic queries from the database. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
