Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2006.
This study analyzes Southern California's Mission Indian Federation's members' violent opposition to the federal government's Indian policy of assimilation in the early twentieth-century. Examining violent confrontations between the Indian organization and the Bureau of Indian Affairs revealed that the government attempted to use the aftermath of these occurrences to suppress the federation's leadership and legitimacy of the organization. By labeling its members criminals to a public unaware of the negative aspects of assimilation, the government's strategy was initially successful. Eventually, however, the federation was able to use the sensationalism of violence to attract the attention of the public's policymakers and expose the atrocities caused by assimilation and committed by the Indian Bureau. The federation justified its members' use of violence as an act of self-defense against a government agency and a federal policy that denied and assaulted the rights of California Indians. Ultimately, the government recognized and accepted the justification for violence and began to reform its Indian policy.
