The purpose of this exploratory study was three-fold (1) to examine the effect of varied amounts of force applied to the handrail on knee joint mechanics; (2) to compare stair descent profiles of older fearful of falling (FF) adults with their non-fearful (NF) counterparts; and (3) to create demographic and health behavior profiles of FF and NF participants that will be used to further understand the interaction between mechanical and psychological properties of stair negotiation in older adults.

Results showed that across the handrail conditions the moments in both the frontal and sagittal plane during stance were not significantly different between the NH and LH conditions. However, the HH frontal moment profile was negative during stance in contrast to the positive moments demonstrated in the LH and NH conditions.

The results from this exploratory study suggest that force applied to the handrail may have implications during stair negotiation. Specifically, there may be an optimal handrail load during stair ambulation. Results also highlight the potential role of self-efficacy and handrail use in the development of safe and effective compensations strategies for stair ambulation. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
