Thesis (M.P.H.)--University of Nevada, Reno, 2006.
The modern death and dying movement began during the latter half of the 20th century following the recognition of a general dissatisfaction with the quality of life at the end-of-life. A retrospective review of data collected during end-of-life seminars and lectures between 1996 and 2003 was conducted to identify common themes and concerns relating to the individual's preferences at the end-of-life. Dominant themes included: (1) spirituality, the search for life's meaning and emotional well-being; (2) concerns relating to pain and physical suffering; and (3) comments describing the scene of death. The data were used to develop a worksheet meant to stimulate conversations between family members relating to death and dying in order to clarify the needs and preferences of each individual and increase the quality of the end-of-life experience.
