The efficacy of two different kinds of cueing strategies in enhancing the prospective memory performance of independently living elderly was investigated. It was hypothesized that (1) simple cueing devices would have a significant effect upon the carrying out of a prospective task; and (2) the type of cue would have a significant effect upon task performance. In this regard, it was hypothesized that those subjects with a visual reminder (a labelled sticker) would perform significantly better than those subjects with a verbal reminder (a nightly telephone call).Subjects--Topical Terms:

A total of 45 healthy, independently living elderly (mean age 69.1 years) were evenly divided into two cued groups and a control. A subterfuge was utilized in order to mask the true intent of the experiment. The task consisted of each subject being required to telephone the experimenter daily for a three week period to report their "sleep patterns".

The data was analyzed by analysis of variance, orthogonal contrasts, and a correlation ratio. The.05 level of significance was selected for the study.

Conclusions. Subsequent to an examination of the data, the following conclusions were drawn: (1) simple cueing devices did have a significant effect upon improving subject performance in the prospective memory task; and (2) the two types of cueing did not differ significantly from each other in terms of their effect upon subject performance.
