Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Ohio State University, 1998.
The focus of this study was to explore self-care strategies of non-institutionalized vision/hearing impaired older adults. Self-care strategies explored were use of assistive devices/equipment, performance of home modifications, and change in behavior. This study used the data from National Survey of Self-Care and Aging 1990-1991 and were analyzed using logistic regression, Wald tests, cross tabulations, and chi-square tests. The research questions were: (1) Is there a relationship between vision/hearing impairment and functional status (Activities of Daily Living, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living, and Mobility Activities of Daily Living)? (2) Do vision/hearing impaired older adults engage in more self-care strategies (use of assistive devices, change in behavior, and modification in the environment) than those without these impairments? (3) Do demographic factors, health status, and receiving assistance from others influence the use of self-care strategies by vision/hearing impaired older adults? (4) Do selected demographic factors, impairment type, health status, and receiving assistance from others influence the most frequently used self-care strategy?

Results indicated that vision/hearing impaired older adults have more functional limitations than non-impaired older adults. Taking demographic characteristics into consideration, vision impairment was a predictor of performing home modifications and changing behavior, but was not a predictor of use of assistive devices/equipment. However, hearing impairment was not a predictor of any of the self-care strategies. Age, education, gender, race, marital status, gender* income, health status, and receiving assistance from others were predictors in engaging in self-care strategies for vision/hearing older adults. Location of residence was not a predictor for engaging in self-care strategies of vision/hearing impaired older adults. Vision/hearing impaired older adults changed their behavior more often than using assistive devices/equipment or performing home modifications. Health status had the greatest impact on the type of self-care strategy used most often by impaired older adults.
