Purpose. The purpose of this study was to assess factors associated with assistive device use and perceived assistive device need by non-institutionalized Americans, age 60 and over, residing in the community. Statistical methods used were correlation, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multiple regression.

Procedure. The sample consisted of 380 subjects drawn by a systematic random procedure from the local telephone company registry for the fall of 1996 in Weld County, Colorado. The survey instrument format was a mail-in questionnaire. The independent variables in this study were age, gender, living situation, education, income level, health status, locus of control regarding health behaviors and attitudes toward disabled people. The dependent variables were assistive device use and perceived need for assistive devices. Eleven hypotheses were generated and tested. A correlation was run as a measure of association between any of the independent and dependent variables, an ANOVA to determine any significant differences, and a multiple regression was conducted to determine any predictive relationships.

Findings. The questionnaire response rate was nearly 40%. The mean age was 73.85 and most were male (60.3%).

Two major findings of this survey were that 63.8% reported they were not limited in their activities and 90.2% reported no expressed assistive device need.

The correlation analysis revealed a significant correlation between assistive device use with age, perceived assistive device need, health status and internal health locus of control (MLC). Significant relationships were also revealed between perceived assistive device need with age, health status and powerful other locus of control (POLC).

The ANOVA analysis revealed a significant difference between those in the age groups of 60 to 69 and 70 to 79 with those 80 years old and over in regard to assistive device use. A significant difference between living situation and perceived assistive device need was also found. Those living with husband/wife/partner were significantly different in perceived assistive device need from those living with family members.

The multiple regression analysis revealed a significant predictive relationship of age with assistive device use and of living alone with perceived assistive device need.
