This study examined ethnic differences in advance care planning including completion of advance directives and end-of-life communication. The Health Belief Model (HBM) was used as a guiding conceptual framework. A two stage non-probability sampling method was used to select participants. Data were collected from 217 Korean American and non-Hispanic White older adults age 65 and over, who were participants of six senior centers in New York City. Hierarchical multiple regression and logistic regression analysis were used to test the HBM. Results showed that Korean Americans were significantly less likely than non-Hispanic Whites to complete advance directives. Ethnicity was shown to have a significant indirect effect via knowledge on advance care planning, but not on any of the health belief variables. Culturally appropriate educational resources and interventions are important to address the findings from this study. Social work practice and policy implications are discussed.
