Exercise behavior's positive impact on quality of life has been well established. However, only 36% of older adults perform exercise as recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine. Social support may be a component that motivates older adults to engage in a healthier lifestyle. Yet, the relationship between types and styles of social support and exercise behavior has not been established. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among types and styles of social support, exercise behavior, and quality of life in older adults.

This secondary data analysis using cross-sectional data study was conducted in exploring the psychometric properties of the Social Support Inventory for Exercise (SSIE) and farther analyses. Participants completed three measurements: the SSIE, the Modifiable Activity Questionnaire, and the SF-36. Explanatory factor analysis with Promax rotation and hierarchical multiple regression analyses via SPSS and structural equation modeling via LISREL were used to analyze the data.

The findings supported only one hypothesis that exercise behavior had a positive and direct effect on quality of life and accounted for 9% of the variance in the quality of life (r =.30, R 2 = 9%). Exercise behavior was positive related to each of the eight dimensions of the quality of life was positive. The findings identify the two-factorial constructs of the SSIE, that of directive and nondirective styles of social support.

In order to motivate older adults to establish physically active lifestyles, nurses should promote the benefits of exercise and recommend that older adults engage in various types of exercises that they find enjoyable. Future study needs to explore the specific types and styles of support that most positively impact exercise behavior and quality of life in older adults.
