Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Utah, 2008.
There are nearly 33 million Americans providing nonpaid care to a person over the age of 50. Moreover, family caregivers in the U.S. provide 80% of all care of an aging individual. Caregivers have expressed the need for more information to assist them with their caregiving duties. The purpose of this study was to develop a website to address informational gaps in family caregiver needs using web usability guidelines, to determine the usability of this informational website for family caregivers by conducting a web usability study and to evaluate the usability of a navigational tool known as deep linking. Participant interest in website content was assessed.

Twenty participants were recruited by convenience sampling from a school district in southeast Idaho through a recruitment email via the school district's listserv. Nineteen past or current caregivers participated in this study. Participants were asked to complete a web usability study and respond to a preusability and postusability questionnaire.

Data indicate that web development using web usability guidelines was important to the caregiver's ability to use the informational website. Participants in the deep link group were significantly faster and more efficient in obtaining information than those in the traditional link group. Participants were most interested in website content that was specific to caring for the care recipient's needs and specific to their caregiving situation.
