Despite collecting a century's worth of evidence, disagreement continues to surround theoretical models of lifespan cognitive development. For example, while the Horn-Cattell model predicted a two factor solution for centenarians, the Differentiation-Dedifferentiation model predicted a unifactorial cognitive structure for centenarians but a multifactorial solution in octogenarians. The relationship between cognition and functional capacity remains unclear as well and opposing theories exist regarding this relationship. Specifically, the Latent Construct model, which predicted an ongoing relationship between cognition and function, was compared to the Domain Specific model, which predicted the maintenance of cognitive skills was unnecessary for intact functional performance. The current study compared the structure of cognition in 199 centenarians and 76 octogenarians participating in the Georgia Centenarian Study. In addition, the ability of cognitive skills as measured by the Severe Impairment Battery (SIB) to predict functional performance was investigated. A three-factor solution composed of language, memory, and executive function abilities was found for cognition in centenarians while octogenarians had a unifactorial cognitive structure. While this result was not entirely consistent with existing models, it replicated previous research with the SIB. The potential influence of ceiling effects in octogenarian performance was also discussed. In addition, all cognitive factors predicted each instrumental activity of daily living (financial skills, communication ability, and time orientation) across the age groups, supporting the Latent Construct model. A gender effect was found for centenarians. Specifically, male centenarians performed better cognitively and functionally than their female peers across several abilities. In addition, cognitive status was more closely related to functional capacity for male centenarians as compared to females. Because centenarians have only recently become a viable population for large-scale investigation, this study increases the knowledge base related to the evolution of cognition through the limits of life. As the average age increases worldwide, implications regarding the observed relationship between cognition and functional capacity are also discussed as they relate to maintenance of independence.Subjects--Topical Terms:
