Relocation, a common transition in older adults, can disrupt existing social networks and challenge seniors to reconstitute these networks. Social engagement is a required component of the process of reconstituting social networks and of feeling connected. In fact, social engagement is considered a precursor to creating social relations and maintaining them.

The purpose of this focused ethnographic study was to develop an understanding of the experience of social engagement for new residents of a senior-designated apartment building in a Canadian urban area. The study was conducted in an apartment building that caters to independent adults over the age of 55 years. Tenants had access to a number of services to support independence, including organized activities and dining room services.

Social engagement was defined in this study as a psychological thought process and a conscious behaviour that shapes all forms of social relationships. Fourteen events of observations and participant-observations, 20 interviews with older adults, and several discussions with staff, as well as 26 documents, were components of the data collection process. Findings revealed that seniors who felt vulnerable created four types of connections to achieve their interaction goals: security, casual interaction, support, and friendship. These findings provided a new understanding of the concept of social engagement in older adults previously lacking in the literature. Influencing social engagement were the social and environmental context as well as personal biological, psychological, and social factors.

Participants described the process of social engagement, characterized by two phases of receptiveness and involvement, as nonlinear. They described conditions important for this process, including taking time and being careful about with whom they engaged socially. Although the process did not determine the type of relationship that would develop, its outcome was the creation of social ties that met their goals.

The findings of this study provide new insight into the concept of social engagement in relocated older adults. Of particular interest is the social engagement model derived from this study. The model provides nurses and other health care professionals with specific information about the process of social engagement and the factors that influence the process.
