Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Alabama, 2007.
This study examined the efficacy of an in-home memory enhancement program for those over the age of 55. The program targeted both objective and subjective memory functioning. Fifty-three participants were recruited from the community and the surrounding areas and were then randomly assigned to either a memory enhancement group or a minimal social support group. Those in the memory enhancement group meet weekly with a member from the research time once a week over a period of six weeks. Those in the minimal social support group received two phone calls from a member of the research team as well as an invitation to a memory workshop at the end of six weeks. A total of 46 participants completed the treatment program.

Post-treatment comparisons between the two groups indicated that those in the memory enhancement group significantly improved their abilities to remember a name with a face, both immediately after presentation and after a short delay, and their ability to not lose items. Additionally, those in the memory enhancement group reported significantly higher levels of contentment with their memory ability, having fewer incidences of memory lapses, using more memory strategies than those in the minimal social support group, and that their main problems with their memory did not bother them as much. However, regression analyses investigating the predictive ability of changes in depression scores as well as initial levels of positive affect on participants' objective and subjective memory revealed that neither was predictive in nature on the variables of interest.

Results of these analyses provide support for the use of memory enhancement programs to improve older adults' ability to keep track of items, remember names and faces, and to also feel better about their memory ability.
