Grandmothers raising grandchildren represent a national trend in family structure that emerged in recent decades as social change destabilized an increasing number of parent-headed households. Reports of population growth characterize the literature surrounding this household demographic as do descriptions of the stress and burden associated with late-life parenting. Researchers have not explored the actual, daily experience of grandparent caregiving nor have they attended to the way context and age shape a grandmother's ability to enact childcare routines. This investigation employed life course and ecological perspectives to study the practical aspects of managing foodways in an intergenerational household and employed pragmatism to study the beliefs and meaning arising from grandmother actions in her provision of nutrition.

The tools used to explore dimensions of belief and meaning included qualitative methods of semi-structured interview and observation of grandmothers as they engaged in food-related activities. Five custodial grandmothers participated in this multi-case study for the purpose of sharing their unique perspective on raising grandchildren and, as part of that caregiver role, how they nurture grandchildren's health through provision of food. Within-case analysis yielded narrative case studies descriptive of each grandmother's life course for food and family according to social, temporal and historic themes. Cross-case analysis resulted in a process model of linked lives that illustrated how intergenerational households emerge from instability; a process model supported by themes of action as grandmothers repackage meal routines, negotiate generational differences and preserve cultural food traditions. A grandmother's belief is explained as confidence, or certainty, in her personal ability to enact the parent role and meaning is explained as a singular experience that stems from the interactions of age, past parenting and elements of the current context. A conceptual understanding of how life course events and experiences interact to influence food behavior and shape belief and meaning marks this project's theoretical contribution.
