Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northern Arizona University, 2008.
The choice of whether to retire or not to retire and where to retire are decisions that nearly everyone faces at some point. This project begins to explore the relationship between retirement location and subjective well-being. The ideas of aging, retirement, expatriation, quality of life, and well-being are explored. Subjective well-being is examined regarding retirement location, Arizona or Costa Rica, and gender. Eight research questions, both quantitative and qualitative, are asked in this project.

There does not appear to be a difference in subjective well-being between retirees residing in Arizona versus retirees residing in Costa Rica. Nor is there a difference in subjective well-being between men and women. There also do not appear to be any differences in subjective well-being for interaction effects between location of residence and gender. The subjective well-being for the vast majority of the retired participants was in the range of high satisfaction.

A qualitative comparison of demographics was done between the groups. This comparison of the four groups, Arizona - men, Arizona - women, Costa Rica - men, and Costa Rica - women does not yield many differences.

The other qualitative section of this study was the interview portion. Interviews were conducted with 20 retirees, ten in Arizona and ten in Costa Rica. These interviews yielded information about motivation for the choice of retirement location, the retirees' experiences, and advice for others looking to retire in those areas. There appear to be more differences within the groups than between them. Two common motivations for retirees in both retirement locations were to be financially sound and to be in a location they perceived as beautiful.

The overall conclusion was that the retirees had high subjective well-being. They also seemed to be happy with their retirement decisions and were doing well.
