Human beings have a basic desire to pursue for a long and good life. This cross-sectional study was designed to examine the determinants of quality of life in Chinese elderly women living alone in Hong Kong. Based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED model, this study explored the determinants of quality of life by means of predisposing, reinforcing, and enabling factors. Predisposing factors included subjective happiness, psychological well-being, age, and perceived health. Reinforcing factors included informal social support, health habits, and functional abilities (ADL/IADL). Enabling factor included leisure satisfaction. Quality of life was evaluated by indicators of life satisfaction. Female subjects, aged 65 years and above, reasonably mobile, were recruited from city parks or through the referrals of district council members and multi-service elderly centres with convenience and snowball sampling methods. Subjects who were institutionalized, unable or unwilling to answer questions or living with someone were excluded. A total of 707 subjects participated in this study on a voluntary basis. These participants were face-to-face interviewed with a semi-structured 84-item questionnaire. After data screening, 565 participants were selected for further analyses. A hypothesized model was tested with LISREL 8.7. The goodness-of-fit indices suggest that this model is tenable for evaluating the determinants of quality of life: chi2/df = 2.56 (chi2 = 40.92, df = 16, p < .01), RMSEA = 0.05, NFI = 0.99, CFI = 0.99, SRMR = 0.01, and GFI = 0.99. Findings of this study suggest that subjective happiness and psychological well-being are the strongest determinants of quality of life. The findings have expanded our knowledge and given useful information on the development of social and health interventions in enhancing the quality of life of Chinese elderly women living alone in Hong Kong.
