Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2008.
The frail, elderly population of Arkansas has an alternative service option to the traditional nursing home, with the assisted-living environment that promotes a less-restrictive model, endorsing a philosophy of dignity and independence. The residents' experiences of dignity and independence have not been examined within the state's assisted-living program. Eleven elderly, assisted living residents with an average age of 80 years old, both male and female, and with an average length of stay of two years participated in the study. The phenomenological study collected the resident's lived experiences of dignity and independence through individual, private interviews within four of the state's level-two assisted-living facilities. Findings of the research include a fear of loss of independence and an association with resident's experiences of dignity and independence with facility activities and socialization. Further research is required to utilize these resident's experiences as a guide for development of measurement tools to ensure all residents of Arkansas assisted living are experiencing dignity and independence and these experiences are leading to resident satisfaction with these programs.
