Older adults who are coping with both depression and medical illnesses are a population at very high risk for loss of independence, re-hospitalization, permanent nursing home admissions, and higher rates of mortality. Adequate screening for geriatric depression is a considerable problem. This study compared the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) with a newer depression screen, the Beck Depression InventoryRTM FastScreen for medical patients (BDIRTM-FS), in a sample of 50 geriatric medical rehabilitation inpatients. Results showed a significant, positive correlation between the GDS and the BDIRTM-FS scores. Differences between total scores on the two depression measures were not related to age, gender, or ethnicity. Future research should examine assessment of depression in a variety of settings, with different geriatric populations, and address whether the use of geriatric depression screens impact clinical outcomes.
