Participants. Analysis focused on a sample of 131 participants age 75 and older who completed the State Farm Senior Driver Research study at UAB, were administered an expanded long-form questionnaire, and were successfully contacted for interviews 2--4 months after their baseline visit.

Measurements. Measures included baseline and follow-up self-rated health; self-reported driving habits; self-reported demographic information on age, gender, education level, general health, and medical conditions; TICS-M; SF-12RTM physical and mental sub-components; crash history for the previous five years; and feedback regarding qualification for an insurance discount (based on UFOVRTM test performance).

Results. Results indicated that only baseline self-rated driving ability (p<.001) was a significant predictor of self-rated driving ability 3 months subsequent. After controlling for baseline driving avoidance (p<.001), qualification status based on UFOVRTM test performance was a significant predictor of driving avoidance after 3 months (p=.04). Only baseline driving exposure was significantly associated with driving exposure at follow-up ( p<.001). Among non-qualifying participants with low baseline driving exposure at baseline, 5% decreased their driving exposure, while 75% increased their driving avoidance. Qualifying participants with low baseline driving exposure reported similar levels of decreased exposure (5%), but much lower levels of increased driving avoidance (43%). Non-qualifying participants with high baseline exposure reported a decrease in driving exposure (50%) as well as an increase in driving avoidance (67%). Qualifying participants with high baseline exposure reported lower levels of decreased exposure (32%) and increased avoidance (42%).

Conclusion. This study found that feedback regarding non-qualification status for an insurance discount was predictive of increased driving avoidance, but not predictive of decreased driving exposure or reduced self-rated driving ability. The results of this study suggest that when given feedback regarding elevated crash risk, older adults with low initial driving exposure may choose to self-regulate to stay safe through avoidance only, as exposure is already minimal, and self-ratings resistant to change. Crash involvement in the previous five years was not predictive of subsequent self-rated driving, driving avoidance, or driving exposure.
