Participation in healthy aging behaviors, such as physical activity and a proper diet, is one of the few known ways to prevent chronic health conditions and stem the rising cost of health care. New research suggests that older adults' expectations regarding aging (aging-expectations) may influence their participation in healthy aging behaviors. Thus the purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the relationships between aging-expectations, neighborhood environment, fruit and vegetable consumption, and physical activity participation in a population of community-dwelling older adults. Potential mediating and moderating relationships of aging-expectations and the neighborhood environment on physical activity participation were also investigated. Survey data was collected from 459 adults (72.3% female; 78.1 +/- 7.2 years) attending senior activities in the greater Columbia, South Carolina area. Participants completed measures of aging-expectations, physical activity (PA), fruit and vegetable consumption (FVC), sociodemographic, health status variables, and characteristics of the neighborhood environment (NE). Bivariate associations revealed that aging-expectations were associated with PA (r = 0.25, p<0.001), FVC (r = 0.20, p<0.001), health status (r = 0.31, p<0.001), and neighborhood environment (r = 0.12, p<0.01), and inversely correlated with age (r = -0.26, p<0.001), number of comorbidities (r = -0.11 p<0.05), physically unhealthy-days (r = -0.10, p<0.05), and mentally unhealthy-days (r = -0.16, p<0.01). Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that, after controlling for sociodemographic and health status variables, current PA and FVC were associated with positive aging-expectations and were significant predictors of aging-expectations (full model R2 = 23%, p<0.0001). Applying Barron and Kenny's (1986) mediation analyses indicated that aging-expectations partially mediated the relationship between NE and PA. These findings indicate that aging-expectations are associated with participation in healthy aging behaviors among community dwellers, suggesting a viable and innovative point of intervention and research.
