520 $a Twelve interviews were conducted with caregivers who were at least 65 years old, caring for minor children under the age of 16, for at least 6 months. Families in which the children were involved in the child welfare system were excluded.
520 $a The cross-sectional study utilized a one time face-to-face interview that included open-ended questions from a caregiver interview and several selected measurement tools on stress perception, coping, and social support. A purposive sample was used to ensure that only the experiences of the phenomenon under review were captured.
520 $a Findings indicated that caregivers sacrifice for the children, sublimating their needs to ensure the well-being of and to create a stable environment for the dependent children. Caregivers also report that there are social issues that contribute to the stress of caregiving, the most important being a disconnect from their peer group because their caregiving responsibilities limit their availability to participate in activities with their friends. Finally, caregivers express a need for changes in the current service delivery system to recognize that the needs of older caregivers are different and must provide services and support that will allow them to continue in these roles.
