Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Calgary (Canada), 2009.
Demographics in Canada point to an aging population because of declining birth rates, greater life expectancy, and baby boomer retirees. Women make up the greater majority of these seniors. An increasing number of these older women are returning to university because of deferred educational goals, the desire to improve career qualifications, and to discover new dimensions about their work skills in retirement.

The purpose of the study is to identify on-campus experiences of women 50 years or older, who reentered two Western Canadian universities in undergraduate or graduate courses between 2000 to 2005, and to understand how these students both benefited from and contributed to academia. Female students comprise more than half of the students in Canadian universities yet the overall academic environment often remains indifferent to them, especially amongst this older female student population. Therefore, it is important to understand how to cultivate an inclusive institutional environment to support reentry women students in transition to academe.

A mixed methodology was used to collect data. Instruments included an open-ended questionnaire, a semi-structured interview, and personal histories to gather data from a population of twenty-three participants, (10% of this total subpopulation). Positive or negative perceptions that were experienced were interpreted within a critical feminist conceptual framework.

Results illustrate how these women cope, strengths of the learning environment, and areas in need of change if campuses are to be more senior-women-friendly. Significant strengths include connecting with others in small classes, increased knowledge, mentor and advisor support, safe classes, specific skill development, geography travel programmes, and excellent health services. Areas to change include more transparent entrance requirements, increased access to recruitment, attention to physiological comfort and the aging process, relaxed classroom learning, and peer support recognition. In spite of little institutional commitment, these women develop a voice by writing and talking about their experience that reinforces their life skill, knowledge, experience, enthusiasm, lifelong learning and prospective volunteerism. The study provides a baseline for future studies about the learning experiences of this increasing student subpopulation. At present, these reentry students represent a vibrant aging population that perseveres in lifelong learning.
