Mississippi's older population is expected to nearly double in the next 20 years, and the state recently ranked highest in the nation for older driver deaths. Therefore, the goal of this study was to provide the first in-depth analysis of older driver crash outcomes in Mississippi which included specific attention to the role of gender. A retrospective correlational study design was utilized to examine factors affecting the severity of automobile crashes in Mississippi. The study population included drivers aged 65 to 100 involved in automobile crashes recorded in the Mississippi Department of Transportation's Safety Analysis Management System between 2004 and 2008. Outcome severity of automobile crashes was categorized as follows: property damage only, non-fatal injury, or fatal injury. Binary logistic regression was utilized to determine odds ratios (ORs) for significant predictor variables using both univariate and multivariate modeling techniques. For the multivariate model comparing property damage only crashes to non-fatal/fatal injury crashes, factors that were found to be significant predictors of crash severity outcomes included: age, sex, intersection type, roadway system, light condition, primary contributing circumstance, vehicle action, and crash type. For the multivariate model comparing non-fatal injury crashes to fatal injury crashes, factors that were found to be significant predictors of crash severity outcomes included: sex, traffic control device, roadway system, light condition, primary contributing circumstance, vehicle action, and crash type. In both of the multivariate models, roadway system had the most exaggerated odds ratios for influencing crash severity outcomes when compared to all other factors analyzed. Based on these findings, recommendations are made for a heightened emphasis on car and road safety features for older adults. In addition, a public outreach campaign aimed toward older driver safety in Mississippi is also recommended. Suggestions for additional research are also included to further substantiate and clarify several of the predictors examined in this study.
