Depression in older persons is an increasing problem in the United States. Isolation from family due to the mobile society, deaths of spouse and friends, or physical limitations can lead to these feelings of depression and sadness. Social support is an integral part of the psychological and physical well-being of the older population. Finding ways to increase access to social support are needed to help the community-dwelling older persons maintain their independence and improve their psychological well-being. The purpose of this study was to determine the role that senior citizen centers play in decreasing depression in the community-dwelling older person. The outcomes of this study demonstrate the importance of participation in senior citizen centers for the emotional health of the community-dwelling older person. Results indicated that subjective understanding of available social support as provided by the senior centers resulted in perceived improvement in life and reduced reported depressive symptoms as evidenced by the Geriatric Depression Scale. Thus, senior centers are an area of resource and support for the community-dwelling older population.
