As our national (as well as global) population ages, identifying specific individual and social factors that affect life course outcomes becomes increasingly important. Previous studies have shown that exposure to negative age stereotypes prior to a task leads to performance deficits in older adults (for a review of this literature, see Horton, Baker, Pearce, & Deakin, 2008). There is also accumulating evidence that exposure to such stereotypes leads to a stereotype fulfilling prophecy in which older adults (physically and psychologically) come to behave in ways consistent with those stereotypes (e.g., Baltes & Wahl, 1996; Hausdorff, Levy, & Wei, 2000; Levy, 1996). This is especially troublesome given the prevalence of negative age stereotypes in our society---through different forms of media as well as responses from others in the context of intergenerational interaction. While there has been a lot of focus on the consequences of exposure to negative stereotypes, few studies have investigated the consequences of exposure to positive stereotypes on older adults' performance. Perhaps even less attention has been given to potential mediators and moderators of the stereotype threat effect on older adults. This dissertation attempts to address the gaps in that literature by taking an interdisciplinary approach to (1) understanding the nature and causes of old age stigma; (2) identifying the consequences as well as potential mediators and moderators of the stigma; and (3) investigating effects of exposure to a positive as well as a negative stereotype of aging.

520 $a This dissertation provides evidence that while older adults do manifest performance deficits on a cognitive task as well as heightened stress responses as a result of exposure to a pro-youth frame, exposure to a pro-age frame enhances performance and protects older adults from manifesting heightened levels of stress. Furthermore, there is evidence that the relationship between priming and older adults' performance is mediated by their stress-related responses. This relationship is also moderated by the time of day participants are tested as well as their own biases (or attitudes) about aging. The implications of these findings as well as future directions for aging research are discussed.
