In recent years, the number of grandparents raising their grandchildren has increased dramatically in the United States. Although research regarding grandparent caregiving has been conducted in rural areas, there is a dearth of information relating to urban grandparents who act as parents to their grandchildren. Specifically, this study examined the role community resources play in aiding both the parental competence and stress observed among one hundred grandparents relative to them acting as parents to their grandchildren. A non-experimental quantitative approach based on a survey design was employed on the use of the three instruments to collect the data for this study: (a) The Parenting Sense of Competence Scale, (b) The Parental Stress Index Questionnaire, and (c) a Demographic Questionnaire. Such research could result in funding for community outreach programs to serve urban populations like the one found in this study.
