Students with challenging behaviors and reading problems often are not successful academically, particularly in the area of reading. Thus, it is critical that effective, research-based interventions be used with these students. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a reading intervention in two middle school classrooms for 7 students with reading problems and challenging behaviors. A multiple probe design replicated in 2 middle school classrooms was implemented to assess the effectiveness of the Corrective Reading program (Engelmann et al., 1999) on students' reading fluency and students' behavior during academic instruction focuses on reading tasks. Results demonstrated a positive impact on all students' oral reading fluency on within-program and generalization passages. Direct observations assessed the impact on students' behavior in both general and special education classrooms. Results are discussed in terms of continuing research needed in the area of reading instruction and behavior intervention for students with challenging behaviors.
