Thesis (Ed.D.)--The University of Alabama, 2004.
Research shows that negative attitudes toward reading create a barrier to improving a student's ability to read. The purpose of this study was to determine the reading attitudes of students in an 11th grade English class and whether or not these attitudes can be improved through the implementation of daily silent sustained reading (SSR) and teacher read alouds. Each day for 10 weeks, the participants of the study were given 15 minutes of S SR time at the beginning of class. In addition, the researcher read aloud to them for 10 minutes at the end of each class. Data were collected through a pretest/posttest administration of the Rhody Secondary Reading Attitude Assessment, interviews with the participants, and an examination of the researcher's log. The findings of the study were mixed. Although much improvement was shown in the reading attitudes of some students, others did not show improvement. These results indicate that many high school students' reading attitudes can be improved through instructional methods; however, these particular methods might be more effective with basic level students. The study implies that teachers who have students with negative reading attitudes should examine their own practices to determine whether a change in instructional strategies might be warranted. In addition, future investigation into the effectiveness of other instructional strategies for improving reading attitudes is recommended.
