Thesis (M.Sc.)--University of Alberta (Canada), 2003.
This dissertation examines the challenges faced by a human who is operating or supervising a system of multiple tele-autonomous robots and proposes some solutions to simplifying their task. A system of simulated, soccer playing robots will serve as an example to illustrate these various challenges. The simulation environment consists of the RoboCup Soccer Simulation Server. The team of robots, team SimCanuck, operates within this simulated environment using a reactive controller based on the subsumption architecture. The on-line coaching functions provided by the simulation environment are used as the conduit to allow a human coach to communicate strategy information to the team which should be accomplished cooperatively. A comparison of two identical systems is performed to measure the relve abilities of a coached team versus an un-coached one. Relative goal differential is used as a performance metric to demonstrate statistical superiority of the supervised multi-robot system. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
