This discourse/literary analysis examined what is illuminated and obscured by Six Traits assessment of English Learner (EL) writing and introduced a novel assessment, Generous Reading, using Bakhtinian theory, and literary analysis. Three third-grade, native Spanish-speaking students' writing was assessed via Six Traits by four teachers from two school districts. Simultaneous, the researcher performed Generous Reading of the same student work.

The four teachers relied on authoritative voices, especially the Six Traits rubric, overwhelming their professional knowledge of emergent EL writing. Other authoritative voices were essay genre, discourse of limited English and discourse of testing. These voices obscured the classroom teacher's knowledge of the emergent EL students. Six Traits illuminated the emergent ELs' deficits. However, Six Traits did not have this effect on advanced EL writing.

Analysis of Generous Reading illuminated organizational and linguistic strategies, appropriation of voices from various sources, and student use of cultural knowledge in both emergent and advanced EL writing. A detailed description of the process of Generous Reading is included.
