Romantic relationships retain enormous significance within contemporary society, and they are ultimately informed by a master template of heterosexual marriage involving sexual and emotional fidelity. Drawing on 2,218 surveys and in-depth interviews with 70 women and men of various sexual orientations, I explore how individuals negotiate love, sex and intimacy within their romantic relationships. Specifically, I focus on the meaning and practice of fidelity in monogamous, nonmonogamous and polyamorous relationships.

I find that fidelity is an integral component within each kind of relationship, although findings show four different types of fidelity practiced by various relationship forms. This typology is delineated through whether individuals accept or resist sexual and/or emotional fidelity, if individual behavior aligns with ideology, and what role personal choice plays in determining exclusivity.

I argue that there are two types of monogamists, those who accept and practice both sexual and emotional fidelity through upholding the ideology of monogamy, and those who accept the tenets of monogamy but behave to the contrary. I point to how monogamists conceptualize monogamy, define sex and perceive and show love to illustrate that the rules of monogamy, sexual and emotional exclusivity, are institutionally and culturally engrained through mononormativity. I argue that monogamists invoke such conceptualizations to clarify what is considered "cheating" within their relationships.

I also examine fidelity within nonmonogamous relationships, showing that while nonmonogamy includes a wide array of relationship styles, most are either sexually nonmonogamous or polyamorous. I find that nonmonogamists and polyamorists establish agreements between partners about rules that govern certain behaviors that are allowed or not allowed with others. These rules clarify the importance of emotional exclusivity as a way to ensure fidelity and "feeling special" among nonmonogamists.

For polyamorists, the rules also serve to establish boundaries, preserve specialness, and indicate commitment because all partners have invested in creating them. Data also suggest that "cheating" is problematic within all three relationship types, although nonmonogamists and polyamorists refer to "breaking the rules" rather than cheating, to avoid terms that reify mononormative definitions of infidelity.

Gender and sexual orientation are the most salient constructs throughout this study, influencing conceptualizations of monogamy, sex and love while affecting rates of nonmonogamy and even types of agreements and rules through gender and sexual scripts. I argue that fidelities in the 21st century are tempered by definitions of monogamy, love and sex, differentiation between sexual and emotional exclusivity, and more individual agency in creating rules and ultimately what indicates commitment within contemporary romantic relationships.
