Thesis (M.A.L.S.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2008.
Upon first consideration, an attempt to uncover similarities between classroom-based acquisition of second languages and the fringe Christian experience of glossolalia, or "speaking in tongues," might seem specious. However, this study, based on interviews conducted with practicing glossolaliacs, demonstrates how the experience can be assessed qualitatively as an acquisition analog, suggesting ideas for LOTE classroom practices that leverage the motivational drivers and behaviors employed by communities where speaking in tongues is an expected behavior. The study explores the history of glossolalia as a language-like phenomenon, interprets the experience of glossolaliacs from that viewpoint, and concludes with a proposed suite of practices based on the research learnings. An extensive appendix presents the study's verbatim interviews with all research subjects, an addition meant to rectify a notable gap in most glossolalia research to date.
