This study investigates the relationship between social support from primary groups and health among the elderly with chronic diseases and physical disabilities. Specifically, three questions are of interest of this study: (1) Is social support associated with less likelihood of self-reported declining health? (2) Who are significant sources of social support: spouses, children or other relatives? (3) Does the impact of social support on health differ in terms of support requirements of respondents?

This study investigates the relationship between social support from primary groups and health among the elderly with chronic diseases and physical disabilities. Specifically, three questions are of interest of this study: (1) Is social support associated with less likelihood of self-reported declining health? (2) Who are significant sources of social support: spouses, children or other relatives? (3) Does the impact of social support on health differ in terms of support requirements of respondents?

To address these questions, this study operationalizes social support in terms of geographical proximity between social support providers and social support recipients. Two types of social support are scrutinized closely: social support in close proximity---support that requires close geographical proximity to be delivered and social support in distant proximity---support that does not require close geographical proximity to be delivered. Specifically, social support in this study is measured in terms of: (1) living arrangement, (2) frequency of seeing children and other relatives as well as (3) frequency of contacting children and other relatives by phone or by mail. Meanwhile, social support requirements of the elderly are also gauged and interaction effects between the available social support and these social support requirements are also examined.

This study confirms beneficial effects of social support on health for the elderly with chronic diseases and physical disabilities but it demonstrates some new patterns between social support and health of the elderly with chronic diseases and/or physical disabilities. First, presence of spouse, either spouse only or spouse and other support providers, is not associated with better health outcomes than absence of any support providers in household. In contrast, living with children or other relatives benefits the physically impaired elderly. Second, children and other relatives are two significant groups of social support providers. Finally, effects of social support from children and other relatives present different patterns, depending on geographical proximity and support requirements of the elderly. Both children and other relatives provide comparable social support in close proximity and effects of such support are independent of support requirements of the elderly. Children also provide social support in distant proximity, which is independent of disease status of the elderly. Other relatives are more likely to provide effective support to the elderly who require more intensive support.
