One of the important applications of antenna arrays in wireless communication is to estimate the direction of arrivals of the source signals. This thesis presents algorithms and techniques used to estimate the direction of arrival for a uniform linear array, a uniform circular array, and a planar array. An eigenvector-based technique known as Pisarenko's harmonic retrieval method and its adaptive version is discussed and implemented with the help of the least mean squares algorithm.

Since linear and circular arrays limit the direction finding in only the azimuthal direction, use of a separable planar array is proposed. The theory of separable planar array is discussed. It is shown that by using a separable planar array, it is possible to resolve the directions in azimuthal and elevation plane simultaneously. The techniques used to detect the directions of arrival are shown to be computationally more efficient than any eigenvector-based technique.
