520 $a A union of theories from financial and psychological literature form the structural equation model analyzed. Duration is a notion measured by household time of initiation of pension contributions, individual retirement plans, purchasing a residence, maintaining an arbitrary low level of credit card debt, and household durables acquisitions. A six-item researcher-designed instrument measuring consumption deferral preference was a stronger notion of deferral than the psychological construct of gratification deferral when included in the model. Compensation for known financial endowments of income, formal education, and inheritance in wealth prediction were included in the model.
520 $a Individual paths were found to be weak but positive in support of the model proposed by the researcher. Taken as a whole, the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA = .059), chi-square divided by degrees of freedom (CMIN/DF = 1.727), goodness of fit index (GFI = .923), and comparative fit index (CFI = .905) triangulate an interpretation from path model literature that the proposed default model is nearly a close fit.
520 $a Twenty-nine percent of two-person households participating in the survey sample of 55- through 64-year-old Americans were found to have achieved net worth sufficient to sustain a household in middle-class consumption without exhausting their assets.
