Thesis (M.F.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2005.

The project, Second Thoughts, is comprised of 5 works derived from my observations of preconceived ideas viewed through schema theory. A schema can be defined as a preconceived cognitive structure representing an object, quality, or concept. Three different schemata were explored. Two bronze sculptures, Contradiction #5 and Untitled (Contradiction #6), create a paradox involving viewers' schemata of the properties of the medium. The interactive piece, Your Name Here, developed from observations of gallery visitors' interaction with artwork. This piece, along with the interactive live video installation, The Custodian's Closet, examines schemata of rules of behavior. The final installation, Second Thoughts, focuses on our schemata of personal danger and explores the disparity between real and perceived criminal threats in our lives. It also examines the interaction of television news with that perception, the blurring of boundaries between TV and reality, and how we incorporate such experiences into our worldview.
