Continuing the curiosity arrangements from seventeenth century Europe, the first American museums exhibited artifacts with no supplemental information. Within the last sixty years, however, a new approach developed that attempts to explain the contexts of artifacts, encouraging the use of knowledge from other disciplines and cultures. By exploring the history of museums and displays, critically analyzing two displays of ancient Greek collections, and exploring the contextual approach further, I aim to show why an educational display is beneficial for museums to educate their audiences. All museums insist on their role of improving the public's intellectual life, and therefore need to explore every means to this end. The results of this paper are encouraging and prove that many museum professionals today see the importance of contextual displays for the benefit of the public.
