This inquiry project documents the process that I went through as I implemented my district's math curriculum into the ELL program. In the past, math had not been a content focus area for the program, but to meet state assessment demands, a new, more challenging curriculum was adopted. ELL students who had previously had success in math, now struggled with a math curriculum that contained cognitively demanding vocabulary and difficult reading levels. By combining my past teaching experience with current literature I hoped to find a way to include math in the ELL program without compromising my students' language development or progress in other content areas. Through this inquiry, I sought effective methods of delivering cognitively demanding content to my students in order to improve student learning and to work towards closing the achievement gap that exists between ELL students and their fluent English speaking peers.
