520 $a This research investigates adult acquisition of the pronunciation of the segmentals of a second language. Four adult, female, native speakers of Mandarin received 20 hours of instruction in the pronunciation of the segmentals of American English that incorporated neurolinguistic and psycholinguistic considerations, an empirically based contrastive analysis of American English and Mandarin, and empirically determined errors normally produced by adult native speakers of Mandarin when pronouncing individual American English words. At the end of 20 hours of instruction, the pronunciation of individual words by all the participants was judged to be as accurate as that of a native speaker of American English. The results suggest that the frequently reported inability of adults to acquire the pronunciation of the segmentals of a second language to the level of accuracy of a native speaker may be the result of not receiving instruction that presents the necessary information in an appropriate manner.
