Thesis (M.A.)--University of Kansas, 2006.
Along with New Orleans, Chicago, and New York, Kansas City is increasingly recognized as a major center in the development of American jazz. This jazz world was focused on Vine Street, between 12th and 18th Streets. Here people came to listen to a style that was both distinctive in its own right and the predecessor of bebop. This same area was also the hub for the local African-American economic and social community. To understand Vine Street better, I examine its past landscapes using historical accounts, Sanborn Fire Insurance maps, city directories, interviews, and photographs. I trace the area from its beginnings in the 1880s as part of Kansas City's racial segregation through its peak in the 1930s, and then discuss its fall and eventual redevelopment.
