Recurring themes in the narratives integrate past and present life experiences. The stories convey both continuity and adaptation, principles also used as analytic devices for interpretation and organization of the data.

Data analysis revealed several kinds of themes: specific ones pertaining to individuals; those common to groups of participants; and others present in all the informants' stories.

One pervasive theme is the dual pasts informants have. Most informants included stories about family origins, the immigration experience, and Americanization. Informants told how, over the course of their lives, the American Dream was constantly re-defined, shifting from satisfaction of immediate personal needs to long-range goals. Informants' narratives showed how ethnic values of mutual aid and interdependence continued while American values of independence and self-reliance were incorporated.

Informants' stories show the variety in current patterns of adaptation including utilization of kin networks and social support. Ethnicity and religion continue to be salient features of identity and experience. Viewing informants within the life course perspective illustrates the persistence of adaptation styles. It also shows how social relationships and current decisions are based on experience and values far more than on age. Differences and similarities between Jewish and Italian participants show the continuing influence of historical events, definition of the family, and resulting ideas of rights and duties of individuals to others.

The value of this research extends beyond the investigation of aging as a way to understand American culture. It encourages anthropologists to consider the relevance of age. Although it adds to the body of knowledge within anthropology, more importantly it demonstrates the need for acknowledging the heterogeneity of American elderly. By showing the diversity of informants, it disspells prevailing myths and stereotypes that portray the elderly as a homogeneous group, and thereby suggests the need to provide the elderly with flexible programs and policies which are adaptable to individual as well as generally felt needs.
