The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a reminiscing group therapy intervention on the intrapersonal and interpersonal functioning of institutionalized older adults. In order to assess and evaluate the effects of a reminiscing group therapy intervention, three groups of institutionalized elderly individuals were studied and compared. These three groups were: a reminiscing therapy group, a current events comparison group, and a no-treatment control group. Each group was composed of four individuals, aged 65 years or older. The treatment and comparison groups each met one time per week, for 90 minutes, for ten consecutive weeks. Each subject was assessed pre- and post-treatment by psychological assessment devices designed to measure various aspects of intrapersonal and interpersonal functioning. The assessment devices included: the Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form, the Satisfaction With Life Scale, the Interpersonal Relationships Questionnaire, and the NEO Personality Inventory. In addition, subjects' physical, social, and psychological functioning was assessed pre- and post-treatment by nursing home personnel. It was found that the reminiscing group intervention led to an increase in interpersonal interaction. Additionally, although not originally hypothesized, it was found that the reminiscing group intervention led to higher levels of openness, higher levels of conscientiousness, and a decrease in excitement-seeking. Overall trends indicated that the reminiscing group exhibited positive improvement across almost all variables studied. The current events group exhibited stability or slight deterioration on all variables. The no-treatment group attained a middle ground between the consistent improvements of the reminiscing group and the stability/deterioration of the current events group. Thus, overall, reminiscence group therapy was found to be an effective treatment modality for improving certain aspects of both the intrapersonal and interpersonal functioning of institutionalized older adults.Subjects--Topical Terms:
