To develop strategies for assuring the appropriate use of mobility devices by elderly rehabilitation clients, factors related to mobility device use were identified. This study examined a broad spectrum of factors and their relation to intention and use of mobility devices. Among these factors were need, values and consequences of device use, caregiver assistance, social support, efficacy, training and design of devices. The relationship between intention and use of devices was also a primary focus of the study.

Two questionnaires were administered, the first during a rehabilitation admission and the second, by mail between 6 and 20 weeks after discharge. Data was collected on 75 rehabilitation in-patients, age 55 or older. Diagnoses were primarily arthritis, stroke, and other neurological and orthopedic conditions. Follow-up data was collected on 68 respondents. Descriptive analyses were conducted for all outcome measures. Logistic regression was used to identify which independent variables were related to four separate intention variables, measures of use for three times after discharge, a measure of use in specific places, a measure of success at getting around due to mobility device use and a measure of ability to get around as one wants to.

Need for the device was the most consistent predictor of device use. Frequencies of both intention and use were high, but intention was not related to use because subjects who indicated they did not intend to use their devices used them after discharge. Overall, subjects felt successful at getting around due to their devices and were getting around as they wanted to. They appear to make rational decisions about use of their devices based primarily on need.
