The aging baby boom generation will influence future generation's quality of life given the growing number of social ills facing modern societies. Social ills are affected by uncontrolled economic and technological growth, and materialism. Generativity (concern for succeeding generations) and meaning in life (MiL) are constructs challenging what is viewed as the negative side of modernity supporting these social ills. The research problem is to understand how this generation expresses generativity. However, there remains a gap in the literature around methodologically combining life satisfaction and life meaning. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze and synthesize the influence of these variables on expressions of generativity. Those from the baby boom generation (N = 116) completed the Generativity/Meaning in Life survey that included demographic items and the following scales: The Loyola Generativity Scale, The Generativity Behavioral Checklist, The Life Regard Index, The Purpose in Life Scale, and Satisfaction in Life Scale. It was hypothesized that generative concern (GC) would be predicted by generative action (GA), MiL, and life satisfaction, and that there would be differential gender effects on the strength and direction of predictors. Multiple regression and mean difference results demonstrated that for women, GA and MiL were significant predictors of GC, and satisfaction with life was a negative predictor. For men, only GA and one measure of MiL were significant predictors. Findings from this research advance a better understanding of the different expressions of generativity by gender, enhancing social change by allowing those in the baby boom generation to express more effectively their generativity and positively impact future generations quality of life.
