This qualitative research study examined the meaning of sexuality in the lives of adults aged 60 years and older. A phenomenological perspective guided the research in order to capture the individual meanings of the participants. A total of 30 unstructured interviews were conducted by the researcher with 18 women and 12 men. Ages of the participants ranged from 60 to 89 years, with a mean age of 69 years. All participants reported being Caucasian and heterosexual. Participants were all community dwelling and in overall good health. Each participant was asked the following question: What is the meaning of sexuality in your life? Participants were encouraged to speak freely and openly, and prompts were used to encourage participants to elaborate. All interviews were audiotaped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed for themes. A total of four themes emerged from the data: (a) Development of Deeper Meaning; (b) Closeness, Companionship, and Togetherness; (c) Alternatives to Sexual Intercourse; and (d) Acceptance of Self Selected participant responses are included to illustrate themes. Implications for the practice of family therapy with older adults are discussed, and suggestions for future research are presented.
