Polkinghorne's (1988) qualitative approach of narrative inquiry was taken to study the meaning of attaining "healthy life" for rural elder community dwellers. The intent was to provide insight into issues of aging within the rural context, including perceived access to health care, health promotion practices, and quality of life. Review of relevant literature pointed out gaps in research as well as findings of studies completed, supporting the need for this study.

Parse's (1992) human becoming theory is explained as a supportive theoretical perspective for this study as it encompasses both Polkinghorne's (1988) philosophical views on narrative inquiry and the imperative for culturally competent research in rural areas. Both theories provided the necessary humanistic approach for studying actions and perceptions of rural elders related to "healthy life".

Purposeful selection and snowball methods were used to obtain participants from rural counties in both Upstate New York and West Virginia. Methods triangulation was taken to gather information through participant observation at four senior meal sites, semi-structured interviews with 13 participants, and three focus groups. Narrative inquiry utilized the natural inclination of elders to reminisce as a means of gathering personal accounts of "healthy life".

A narrative analysis approach was taken to describe elements of healthy life for these participants within the context of their stories. Narrative cognition sought out what was remarkable or unique about each story. Narratives were constructed by the participants and reconstructed by the researcher during four phases of analysis, transcription, visualizing the whole, immersion and the story. Three layers of meaning of healthy life unfolded throughout the analysis process: (a) initial understanding, (b) cognitive understanding and (c) interpretive understanding. Meaning came through a merging of participants' views and researcher's insights.

As the stories unfolded, the meaning of healthy life for each individual became clearer and more personal. Implications drawn from the analysis are important for nurses as practitioners, educators and researchers. Gaining an understanding of individual perceptions and resources possessed by rural elders and tapping those resources is perhaps the most important implication for assisting this population in attaining "healthy life".
