The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions of grandparents raising their grandchildren regarding their personal challenges, how they have learned to cope with these challenges, and what aspects of their new roles/functions were going well for them. The author recruited eight Caucasian American grandparents above the age of 30. Grandparents consisted of three married couples and two single grandmothers. This researcher interviewed each married couple twice and each single grandmother once.

520 $a Grandparents expressed that they became caregivers to their grandchildren because the biological parents were either incarcerated, had a drug addiction, were abusive and neglectful, or had mental health issues that interfered with good parenting. The results indicated that grandparents encountered challenges with the parents of the grandchildren, the legal system, and the grandchildren's behaviors. Other challenges included financial, emotional, social, and marital stressors. All grandparents expressed a fear of possibly losing their grandchildren to the biological parents. These grandparents relied mostly on their perseverance in coping with these challenges. A major finding of this study was that these grandparents perceived their success as caregivers by providing their grandchildren with opportunities for a new life with better life experiences. They wanted to provide structure, consistency, love, safety, and opportunities for their grandchildren to be successful in life. Implications of the study include a need for health care providers, psychotherapists, social service agencies, and public policy makers to assess, understand, and find new ways to meet the special needs of grandparents raising their grandchildren.
